Instead of giving you the usual spiel about how to start 2023, why don’t we start with how NOT to start 2023

Stop Thinking 2023 Will Be Different

Just because the year has changed, doesn’t mean all your problems and reasons you haven’t started yet will disappear.

The new year doesn’t magically erase your problems, nor does it bring a newfound sense of self.

2023 is not YOUR year.

Want to know why?

Because every year is your year.

The only way to make 2023 different, is to do it yourself.

Nothing changes if nothing changes, so make some actual changes.

The best place for you to start isn’t by thinking you are suddenly endowed with maximum willpower and ability to change your whole life just because you went from December 31st to January 1st.

Lives don’t change overnight.

2023 won’t inherently be different unless you MAKE it different.

Start small, find your lowest hanging fruit, and commit to being consistent over time.

Veganuary

This isn’t a knock against the Veganites.

But Veganuary has become a craze with puts Veganism on a pedestal of health in which we should all aspire to be Vegans.

Because it’s such a fantastic way of eating…

Truth is, going Vegan most likely won’t solve your problems.

Would you lose weight? Possibly.

Depending on your start point (i.e., are you eating a tonne already), then going Vegan will probably result in some weight loss.

It can be harder to overeat on a Vegan diet (but definitely possible), due to the restrictions on certain foods.

But any diet will result in weight loss as long as you’re in a calorie deficit.

Will your health improve?

Probably.

But once again that’s a lot to do with your start point.

Going Vegan is healthier not just because of what’s being added into your diet (I.e., fruit and veg); it’s what’s being taken out that often matters more.

If you take out all that processed food you’re eating and replace it with a base of vegetables and fruit, then sure that could be considered healthier compared to where you began.

Plus, weight loss is a massive driver of improvements in health.

But that’s not something you can only get from going Vegan.

You can include more Veg and fruit into a diet that already contains animal products, lose weight, and improve your health.

If you’re going Vegan for ethical reasons, then more power to you.

But let’s not pretend like it’s the best way of eating, or it makes you inherently healthy.

You can have a very healthy diet and lose weight with a diet that contains animal products.

What matters is what you can stick to, and the sudden switch to a drastically different diet rarely ends well.

Relying on Motivation

Motivation has to be one of the biggest myths when it comes to making a change.

I will tell you now, I am not motivated all the time.

In fact, I’d say I’m actually motivated about 50% off the time.

Yet I rarely miss workouts, I eat well, and I’m constantly striving to make progress.

Am I special?

Far from it.

But I am disciplined.

Motivation is a feeling.

And it’s often actually derived from action, which comes first.

So, if you’re hanging around waiting for motivation to hit you, you’ll be waiting a long time.

Sure, you may suddenly feel inspired by a friend’s progress, or by a movie you watch.

Perhaps there are periods when you feel motivated to get going.

And this is the time when you start to build discipline.

You start to build habits that shape your life.

If you think that motivation will get you to where you want to be in 2023, you’re wrong.

It’s normal to not feel like it.

It’s normal for it to be hard.

It’s normal to want to do other things.

If we only done things when we felt like it, then no one would get much accomplished.

If you do anything in 2023, build discipline and habits and change your routine.

Take action first, which will then inspire more motivation to feed your accomplishments.
